Finding Belonging in the Most Unimaginable Place: eDiscovery
Article written by Sabrina Araujo, Consultant in Legal Tech & eDiscovery, B2B Marketing and Graphic Design for Brand Authenticity
Since stepping into the B2B world, I always wanted to work for a consultancy. Not the kind that throws advice over the fence, but one that cares about people, systems, and the messy realities that tie them together. If my mind had a shape, it would be a dot-to-dot page where I am always trying to connect the right points for myself and for the people I support.
I laughed recently at a stand-up bit calling consultants “make it up” jobs. Funny, because most jobs are. We spend our days building belief in our work, our teams, and our impact. But that joke stuck with me. The best consultants are pattern finders. They help people see what already exists and guide them toward something better.
I found that kind of work in the most unexpected place: eDiscovery.
Consulting Is More Human Than You Think
Like many in this field, eDiscovery arrived by accident. Coming from the creative world, I had never heard the term and barely understood what it meant. Six years later, persistence and a community of generous professionals and friends have taught me more than I ever expected. I now see those people as my consultants.
When most people hear the word consultant, they think of frameworks, expertise, and perfectly polished slide decks. I love a good slide deck, but consulting goes deeper. It is a human discipline.
It is about:
Listening to people with real attention.
Understanding their surroundings and needs.
A good consultant listens before speaking. They are not afraid to say that a process does not work, or that money is being lost, or that a mistake needs attention. They deliver what is needed, not only what is wanted.
A consultant is like that friend who tells you the truth because they want you to succeed. They are not scared of not knowing or making mistakes, because they know we can work together to fix things.
Where Creativity Meets Logic
Consulting is design thinking in real life. Strategy, execution, and empathy working together. That is why I see so much potential for creativity in the legal tech world.
Yes, it is an industry built on precision and structure. But inside that structure is room for innovation. I see creativity in the professionals who show up every day with deep expertise, in the associations and events that elevate the field, and in the people who give their time to support the community.
Creativity is not tied to a job title or an industry. It comes from alignment between what you value and the culture around you. When that alignment clicks, work becomes about belonging.
Belonging changes everything. It frees you to listen, to build, to question, to design better solutions, and to enjoy the work in front of you. It also gives you space to be creative by giving you endless dots to connect.
A Closing Thought
I found that alignment in eDiscovery. Not because the industry is perfect, but because I am surrounded by people who believe in the same things I do. When you trust the business you work for and it trusts you back, the work becomes more than a job.
It becomes a place to grow.
